article that takes us inside how the romney campaign stumbled. romney promising details on how he plans to create 12 million new jobs is out with two new ads blasting the president's record. >> this was household income when president obama took office. this was the national debt. under obama, families have lost over $4,000 a year in income. and the national debt is now $16 trillion and growing. barack obama, more spending, more debt. failing american families. and all this comes as the campaigns try to seize control of the foreign policy narrative. both the anti-u.s. outrage that's headwindered the u.s. mission in the middle east, as well as increasing pressure on the obama administration from israel to get tougher on iran. for mitt romney, this may be what politico calls the highest-stakes 24 hours since the announcement of paul ryan as vp. >> he's a horrible candidate. he's got perhaps one of the

worst-run presidential campaigns in modern american history. but now it's the pollsters' fault -- >> i think it's too early to write off the romney campaign. >> you send signals to elites, andrea mitchell, people like that. that you have an actual foreign policy plan that's different than the incumbent party and you're going to make changes. i don't think governor romney's pulled off either. >> let's get straight to the road and to nbc's kristen welker live in cincinnati where the president will make remarks in the 12:00 hour. trying week for the white house. and today the focus is in ohio. what are you expecting there? what's the president's message going to be? >> reporter: goorngs richard. president obama is said to announce a trade complaint against china when he addresses the crowd here in cincinnati.

the obama administration accusing china of subsidizing its exports of autos and auto parts and essentially putting u.s. automakers at a disadvantage. he's also going to announce the escalation of another trade complaint that he first announced back in july. this of course comes on the heels of steady criticism from mitt romney that president obama hasn't been tough enough on china. and it also really allows the president to appeal to the voters here in ohio. one out of every eight ohioans have some connection to the auto industry. and of course this is a key battleground state. in addition to all of that, it allows the president to try to start turning the page from last week which is of course a difficult week for this administration as they monitored and continue to monitor those protests that erupted throughout the middle east at embassies as folks protested that anti-muslim video that was made right here in the united states. just to look back at how it all began, president obama really

became aware of those protests on tuesday. that's when he first learned that the ambassador to libya, chris stevens, was missing. on wednesday, the president, the administration received the tragic news that embassy stevens had been killed along with three other americans. you remember president obama addressed the nation on that day. then he headed back out on to the campaign trail, all the while talking to the leaders of libya and egypt. and in addition to that, dealing with mounting tensions with israel over iran. israel saying that iran is getting closer and closer to developing a nuclear weapon. so this campaign, the big issue was about the economy. now foreign policy has inserted itself. and it could be a problem for the obama administration moving forward. so today i think you're going to see president obama try to turn the page to some extent. richard? >> kristen welker with the president. thank you so much. joining us now, our monday political power panel, "washington post" reporter

nia-malika henderson, susan del percio as well as morris reid. nia-malika, i'll start with you. watching the papers all morning, several news outlets, politico, "the new york times," "usa today," talking about mitt romney's resal brags -- recalibration of his campaign strategy. what have you been hearing? how are things for the campaign right now? >> well, 50 days out, he had who was a bombshell of a story in politico, really detailing some of the chaos that exists in that campaign. at this point, you have a campaign that's been losing steam, a lot of republicans offering all sorts of advice about how they can retool. and now you have this infighting exposed by politico. at this point, they've got 50 days to figure out how to turn this thing around because you do have many people questioning not only the folks who are surrounding mitt romney but the way he's run his campaign.

any presidential campaign itself becomes a proxy for how someone would actually lead in the white house. here you have a candidate in mitt romney, a ceo running about -- running on his management skills, obviously having problems here managing his own campaign. he will turn now to the economy in a series of speeches, he'll reach out today to latinos. he know what is we know. and that is that he's having trouble in some of these must-win swing states, ohio, florida and virginia. so he's got to turn this thing around. we'll see that in the coming days. >> as we drill down on one of the articles, susan, everyone's talking about the front-page story on politico, "inside the campaign, how mitt stumbled." it talks about how romney's top strategist, stewart stevens, is responsible satellite/radar some of the major missteps here. here's what bay buchanan said on "the daily rundown." >> this story is ridiculous. i have been in many presidential campaigns. the key to a good one and

governor romney is absolutely clear about, this he doesn't want yes people. he wants people who are going to tell him exactly what they think. you have a good, strong discussion. a final decision is made by the governor. >> if this is correct, any of these indications we've been reading in the papers, is this a problem with mitt romney? >> it's a problem that it got out to the public more than anything else. to see disagreements play out in a campaign is not unusual. to see them play out at this stage is. so that's probably -- it's extremely early to see this kind of backbiting. but it is up to mitt romney to right his ship. they said they're going to go forward with an economic message. they've got to do that. they're out with two very good ads. they have the debates coming up. but they have to put their best foot forward now and stay on the path -- >> what would you change, susan? >> well, first of all, they need to offer up some specifics. that's one thing that everyone is crying out for. how is he going to fix the economy? second, he has to stay on

message. he can't be going off on other issues. he's got to stay focused on the economy. that's what people care about. that's how he's going to win. >> morris, the romney campaign is shifting the discussion back to the economy, as susan was intimating there, this week. a series of ads to air in battleground states arguing that romney's plan would create 12 million jobs. they feel the president's lead in many battleground polls are not insurmountable long term. what's your countermessage if you're on the romney campaign? >> there's a lot of campaigning that needs to be done. we need to double down on our efforts. it's good to see the president's going to ohio, announcing measures against china that deals directly with the auto industry. that's smart politics, reinforce and double down where you have your strength. don't cede any ground to the

republicans. it's time to double down and stay focused on the points that you can drive home, that you've done a good job for the economy. >> is it good to take that message that the romney campaign is pushing with regard to china not being strong with that country? >> the romney campaign has no credibility on foreign policy. it's been obvious. as i said over the weekend, i don't want to really beat up on him because americans died. but he has no credibility on foreign policy. he stumbled when he went to london. he had a bad week in foreign policy. he has no credibility here. this is the president of the united states talking. particularly when he talks on auto industry issues in ohio, he has a lot of credibility. people believe in what he's saying, particularly on this issue. >> the protests all over the muslim world called into question what had been a strong point for the president up to this moment, foreign policy. here's what was said a little bit earlier. take a listen to this. >> what we see is the president's policies in the middle east falling apart. the reality is is president got elected to reset our

relationship in the middle east. we might as well not have had the reset. >> rudy giuliani with that comment there. the polls give the president is substantial lead on foreign policy. to the point that morris was also making here, do republicans have an opening because of what happened last week? >> republicans have to be very careful on jumping the gun too soon as we saw with the romney campaign on tuesday. that doesn't mean that they can't come out and state what they believe is the best policies going forward, especially when it comes to israel. that is a bit of an opening for the republicans. but to try and figure out what's going to happen day by day in the middle east is next to impossible. and because it's next to impossible, that instability will become -- could become problematic for the president. >> nia, last question to you here. the obama campaign outspending the romney campaign seven to one during the weeks before the convention. now the romney campaign will unleash the firepower of that funding advantage that morris was talking about. will romney's money swamp the message here? what do you think? >> yeah, i think that's

certainly their hope. they have a significant money advantage. but at some point, money might not matter because the air dlz wav airwaves are going to be so flooded with these ads. he hasn't made the case on why obama should be fired and why he should be hired. it has to do with policy details. and it isn't clear that even this week, he's really going to roll out enough policy specifics that will convince voters that he should get the job. >> it's about message and what you have done and mitt romney hasn't put forth on argument yet. he's been spinning but with no details. >> but really good political ads can turn an election. that's why they still have them and still use them. >> we'll have 50 days to watch that. >> they need to hire susan. >> nia-malika, susan, thank you so much all three, as well as morris. still on the agenda today, anti-american protests turn violent in afghanistan. i'll talk to senator bob casey

violent new protests today against that anti-muslim film that ridicules the prophet muhammad. this video just in from pakistan where protesters set off a fire at a press club. it reportedly killed at least two demonstrators. we also have this new video from yemen's capital where the u.s.

has set more marines to guard the u.s. embassy. and then in jakarta, indonesia, protesters hurling fire bombs and clashing with police outside the u.s. embassy. then we take you to afghanistan. protesters there burning cars and clashing with police near a u.s. base on the outskirts of kabul. we go live to afghanistan. nbc's atia abawi joins us live from kabul. what's the latest? >> reporter: hi, richard. today was a violent day of protests here in afghanistan. we've seen days of protests since friday. and they were all very peaceful up until today, outside of the city of kabul at a main road, there were hundreds of demonstrators coming down that road where a nato base is located, as well as western compounds, western security companies living there. they were throwing giant rocks at the security compounds, they were throwing it at the police officers who were trying to tame the demonstration, according to the police here in afghanistan in kabul. they say that at least 45 of their police officers were

injured primarily with minor injuries, including the police chief. but they refuse to fire at the crowd, afraid that it would agitate them even more. according to the district police chief, he says there were agitators among the crowd, pushing these people to turn violent, therefore setting blaze to two police vehicles at least. four vehicles in total. and there were injuries among the crowd as well. but it was dispersed within an hour and a half before they could make it into the capital, the city where the u.s. embassy was located. but there was also riot police there ready for the demonstrators just in case they made to it the u.s. embassy. richard? >> this as we head inside the story on the attacks yesterday. [ atia abawi thank you so much. a global will to keep oil shipping lanes open as israel and iran trade threats of war. that exercise comes a day after

israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu tried to turn up the pressure on president obama to draw a clear red line that iran cannot cross with its nuclear program. if it wants to avoid war. on "meet the press" on sunday, netanyahu insist that is iran is six months away from producing weapons-grade uranium. take a listen. >> they're in the red zone. they're in the last 20 yards. and you can't let them cross that goal line. you can't let them score a touchdown. >> joining me live right now, democratic senator bob casey of pennsylvania, a member of the foreign relations committee. senator, thank you for being with us today. you heard the estimate there. netanyahu saying six to seven months more until iran is about 90% there for a bomb. but on "meet the press" sunday, u.s. ambassador susan rice disputed that estimate. take a listen to this. >> they're not there yet. they are not there yet. and our assessment is and we share this regularly with our israeli counterparts and the

intelligence and defense community, that there is time and space for the pressure we are mounting which is unprecedented in terms of sanctions to still yield results. this is not imminent. >> senator, what is a good estimate? >> well, richard, the intelligence would indicate probably a set of different numbers depending on which intelligence you're looking at. but i think the important here is -- >> is six to seven months in that range? >> a lot of what i've been given information about is classified. so i don't talk about what i hear in classified briefings. but here's the key thing, the united states and israel in terms of the security cooperation, that bond has never been stronger. there's an awful lot of information sharing. i know you might have in interviews a lot of back and forth. that's not the important thing. the important thing is we're sharing information. and i think there's no question that our government is very determined. and i can tell you this as a

member of the foreign relations committee who chaired a subcommittee that includes iran, very determined to make sure that iran does not get nuclear weapons capability. i've been very clear and i think people in both parties have been clear that containment is not good enough. we want to prevent iran from getting nuclear weapons capability. that's the policy of the united states government and should be the policy. >> what might this red line that netanyahu has been alluding to, what might that look like? >> i don't want to speculate on what a line should be. and i think we get caught up in kind of the language of red line or not. the most important consideration here, in my judgment, is nuclear weapons capability. we have to prevent iran from getting to that point. if we do that, i think we're going to be moving in the right direction. but we do need more of -- i don't see enough of this in washington, is an emphasis on democrats and republicans working together. the good news on israel and the

good news on our policy as it relates to iran is you have a lot of bipartisan agreement. i wish we saw more of that on the larger questions in the middle east. >> senator, when we do see benjamin netanyahu speaking on all the major sunday programs and he is taking his case to the public airwaves of the united states, even using analogy that is we all can understand well, this sharing of information that you're talking about, this working together behind the scenes that you're alluding to, is that really the case? >> oh, sure it is. sure it is. look, i realize that when interviews take place, that people interpret things from that. but the most important thing for people to know is that sharing and that cooperation of security information has never been stronger. and i think both our government and the israeli government have the same goal in mind and are determined to make sure that iran doesn't get nuclear weapons capability. and that's why senator joe lieberman and lindsey graham and

i had not just a bipartisan but a tri-partisan resolution which basically said that the focus should be on preventing them from getting the nuclear weapons capability. we have to be determined to do that. i doesn't mean we don't play out and push very hard all of the sanctions that are in place. but we have to be very determined to stop iran from getting nuclear weapons capability. >> iran confirming just within the last 24 hours that it does have non-military assistance in syria. this, just another element to some of the concerns that benjamin netanyahu brought up. >> well, look, i don't believe iran when they say they've got -- could force soldiers or forces on the ground they're not providing. iran is the leading state sponsor of terrorism around the world, including putting boots on the ground if not weapons on the ground in syria. they are a bad actor in the region and i think iran's actions threaten all of us.

today? >> reporter: well, they've certainly reconvened, at least for one day, richard. and by the looks of things today, familiar sights and sounds for residents and employees here in lower manhattan. the occupy wall street movement really celebrating that first birthday by turning lower manhattan into a hotbed. instead of the original zuccotti park location, they're using twitter to localize clusters of protesters all around lower manhattan instead of just in one place. what that's led to is a bevy of protests. organizers say between 70 and 100 arrests have taken place. so far, it's a day-long movement and it actually started on saturday. but they're message still isn't clear. foreclosures, bank bailouts, some pressing for the independence of puerto rico and regulating the art market. but you will see responses from both the campaigns of governor romney and president obama

targeting the middle class instead of that 99% number. that's probably the most lasting achievement is that rhetoric. >> that remains consistent from them. kayla tausche there in manhattan, thank you. one conservative group vowing to mobile lize a small gp of voters on election day. and the boy scouts accused of brushing allegations of child abuse under the rug. we'll tell you how the group is responding and how far these allegations go back. rogaine? well, i'll admit it.

[ crowd gasps ] [ woman ] reverend? ♪ can i have some? ♪ this hour, all this week, we're going to look at the ballot battles that could decide the race for the white house. a group called true the vote says it plans to question the validity of voter registration rolls and voter who is appear on november 6th. the group's president says, quote, the vast majority of americans, over 74%, demand better election integrity measures, ranging from accurate voter rolls to election observation and voter identification, end quote.

opponents of the group strongly disagree saying, quote, organizers of true the vote want to make the experience of voting like driving and seeing the police following you. the group's involvement adds more debates in states where already contentious legal fights are being fought over voting laws. in battleground ohio, early voting heavily favored by democrats and african-american voters is under fire. for example, back in 2008, in montgomery county, 28,000 early voters turned out in person and one-third voted on the weekends. ohio republican secretary of state claims he wants to make voting in ohio uniform, easy, fair and secure while pushing to kill early voting. he's now the subject of a lawsuit for firing officials who refused to follow his early voting ban. in another swing state, iowa, where the latino population jumped 92% in the last 11 years, a lawsuit is moving forward on

the issue of voter eligibility. the lawsuit accused iowa secretary of state matt schultz of pushing a set of rules to check the citizenship status of 3,500 voters in the state. on friday, a state judge put those rules on hold. our next two guests are wired into the concerns of minority voters in both states. joining me is democratic sate senator nina turner and ken spaling. state senator, let's start with you. we have a live picture of president obama's campaign event in cincinnati where the president will be speaking in just the next hour. here's a shot there. he won your state back in '08 by a little over 260,000 votes. a lot of them cast by early voters, 197,000 on nights and weekends. secretary of state cutting early

voting is about cutting costs, that's what he says. what do you say about that argument? >> nonsense. using the guise of making it more cost effectiveness is guise for voter suppression. what is the cost for not running elections fairly? what happened to justice, freedom, liberty and the vote for all? what is going on in ohio and across this country is just out-and-out voter suppression and it should be no surprise why they are doing it. i wonder where they were when president reagan was in offense or both president bushs or even president clinton. now that we have our first african-american president, all of a sudden across this country and particularly here in the state of ohio, all of a sudden they want to protect the vote. it is nonsense. >> state senator, what the secretary of state is also saying is that by employing these rules, that the number of early voters -- and there were

some 40,000 thrown out from those early votering registrants -- that number will go down if they employ this rule. >> it absolutely -- in cuyahoga county, for example, 56% of african-american voters in my county voted early in person where they only make up 26% of the voting population. it is on record. we have the data in urban counties across this state, how african-americans use early voting and for the secretary of state to turn a blind eye to that data, for him to turn a blind eye to the class implications on this, that folks who work two and three jobs just to make ends meet will not have the same access to the ballot as they had in 2008. make no mistake about it. folks in the state of ohio will have less access to the ballot in 2012 than they did in 2008. again, it is a guise. when shakespeare says a rose by any other name is still a rose,

voter suppression by any other name is still voter suppression. >> what's your view on the organization, true the vote? last month they held a meeting in columbus about ways to combat voter fraud. at the meeting, the group's senior adviser is quoted by "the new york times" accusing voter registration groups of perpetrating fraud. he said, quote, when anybody pays a little bit of attention to the fact that there's a high level of fraud coming out of the african-american communities, they say, oh, you're a racist, you don't want black people to vote. vote fraud deniers is what i call them. what do you think about these statements being made by her? >> first of all, my dear sister is delusional. even the brennan center has said you have a greater likelihood of being struck by lightning than folks going into polling places to impersonate people. let's make sure the access to the ballot is there. it makes no sense. it is insanity at its worst. it is un-american. it is unjust to target any group

of folks, whether african-american, hispanic, poor or elderly, when it comes to access to the vote. the vote is the last great equalizer that we have in this country. and i don't care if the face is black, white or latino. anyone that stands up to say that it is okay to suppress the vote across this country, they are absolutely wrong. and we're going to continue to fight this voter suppression wherever it rears its ugly head. >> steven, what's your sense of true the vote and the volunteers that will be there? critics say it will intimidate people at the polling places. >> we are concerned about a large number of organizations. true the vote is one of them that are organizing to confront voters at the polls about their status. but this is really about politicians that are manipulating the process, rigging the rules to make it so that eligible americans can't cast that basic fundamental right. and what your viewers should know is that common cause and a huge coalition of voter protection groups are training well-trained volunteers to go to the polls so voters do know their rights. if voters have questions or have

issues, call 866-our-vote, so they know what kind of id they might need. if they see this kind of behavior. but we do know that people are organizing to make it harder to vote and it's a fact that african-americans, students, young people, elderly americans, veterans, all of these laws will make it harder for them to vote. we should be expanding access and participation. and we will have voters' backs before and on election day. >> steven n that same "new york times" article i quoted a little bit earlier, the president of true the vote was saying that they had reports of buses carrying hundreds of people to voting places, for example, during wisconsin's recall election and that they were being dropped off. they had questions about where these buses of people came through. at the top of the article, the writer says, quote, it might as well be harry potter's i invisible night bus because no one can prove that it exists, end quote. what's your thought here? >> i have to agree that just because one says something doesn't make it so. look, no one wants voter fraud.

no one wants ineligible people voting. the issue is these policies that politicians have been writing, that spapartisan activists have been pursuing. but you hear about these buses of voters, you hear about what they say is the food stamp army out to steal the election, the illegal alien vote, their words, trying to steal the election. but that's not backed up with reality. no one wants voter fraud. but we don't want to make it where eligible americans can't exercise their rights to vote. let's take down these barriers instead of enacting roadblocks and making people jump over hurdles to exercise what is the most basic fundamental freedom. that's what your democracy is about. it's about going to the ballot box and participating and having control over our democratic process. we are working overtime to make sure voters know their rights so

we're back with a new high-tech way to track the campaign ads that have flood this had presidential election. the new app from the daily beast tells you virtually anything you'd want to know about the ads hitting the airwaves. this comes with news that conservative super pacs like the one funded by sheldon adelson are now targeted blue states which could force democrats to spend money they did not anticipate. let's bring in andrew romano.

this comes as a new poll shows that three-quarters of voters now worried about outside cash in the campaigns. let's start by looking at one of the ads. first we have one from crossroads gps, a super pac funded by karl rove. >> the president who skips half of his intelligence briefings but finds time to play more than 100 rounds of golf. hits the campaign trail after a u.s. ambassador is murdered in the line of duty. mr. president, it's time to show up for work. >> what stands out about that ad? >> well, it stands out, the lack of context. this is a perfect example of a republican-leaning, a conservative ad that's extremely misleading. essentially the accusation that obama skips his intelligence briefings is completely unfounded. he gets his briefings by ipad or on paper whenever he's in the white house, he has meetings

with his intelligence advisers. so this is just a remarkably misleading ad. also the 100 rounds of golf. dwight eisenhower played 800 rounds of golf when he was president. so you have to look at it in context. >> the golf context. we also have an ad from priorities usa, the super pac who is backing president obama. let's watch this one. >> mitt romney's budget plan will hurt the middle class. raising taxes on the average family by up to $2,000. while giving a tax break of $250,000 to multimillionaires. doesn't mitt romney understand, we can't rebuild america by tearing down the middle class? >> a choice ad. >> yeah. the interesting thing about this, it's a relatively supportable claim they're making. it's based on research by the tax policy center that says that mitt romney -- suggested that he wants to cut taxes for people making over $250,000, the highest earners by up to

$250,000. he's not specified how he would close loopholes and so the tax policy center found that it would potentially lead to a raise of taxes on middle class earners by $2,000. it reinforces obama's message that romney is not good for the middle class. it's running in wisconsin, which is a state we didn't think was going to be in play. but the polls have tightened since paul ryan joined the republican ticket. >> our numbers shows that ad is responsible for 44% of total spending. voters now very leery about that outside cash. andrew romano, interesting app. something i'm going to use as the election moves on. appreciate it. >> thanks. the donald talks politics with a kardashian. it's time now for the political sidebar. donald trump wants kim kardashian to vote republican. he sent a tweet her way this morning saying, hey, kim kardashian, i hear you are undecided in the election. ki explain why you should vote for mitt romney, end quote. no response yet from kim.

the boys scouts of america

responding to a disturbing investigation by the l.a. times reporting that for years the boy scouts failed to report al allegation sex abuses and some instances covering up for those abusers. set to be released under an order by the oregon supreme court. joining me with more of this troubling story is investigative reporter jason felts. i was just looking through your report here. you're saying the organization has what's called pro version files which are confidential and that in about 80% of the instances where the cases were actually brought to attention by boys, parents or staff members, 80% of those had no record of actually boy scouts of america or scout officials documenting that? >> that's right. there's no indication that they went to the authorities after receiving detailed accounts of sexual abuse of boys ranging from 8 years old up to 18 years old.

in 100 of those cases we found explicit references to efforts to keep that information away from parents, from law enforcement, from the press, and some cases scouting officials lied to the press or misled parents by allowing accused scout masters who had been accused of molesting kids of writing resignation letters for false reasons, going to, you know, increased responsibilities for shakes speers festival or suffering from some chronic brain disease. bogus reasons to cover the tracks of sexual abuse. >> chronic brain disease? >> that was one of the many excuses we saw used in these false resignation letters. >> how shocking and widespread according to what you've discovered is this problem? i think you were saying from 1970 to 1991 is the time span you're looking at? >> it's hard to tell, in part

because these allegations are somewhat old and what we'd like to know is, what's happening today in the boy scouts of america. we don't know that because the boy scouts of america has not released their more recent files. they continue to use this confidential filing system to keep track of men accused of sexual abuse. they've since -- since t the '70s, '80s and '90s implemented a series of reforms intended to protect kids from sexual abus in the organization. but we don't know how well they've succeeded at doing that because they have not released these files publicly. >> they have released this statement for pusp let me read part of it. quote, the boy scouts of america believes that one instance of abuse is far too many. we regret there have been times when, despite the bsa's best efforts to protect children, scouts were abused an for that we have very sorry and extend our deepest sympathies to victims. we have always cooperated fully with law enforcement and require our members to support even

suspicion of abuse directly to local law enforcement. what's your reaction to that? >> i think it underscores the fact that the boy scouts have taken serious steps in repeat years, but again, we don't know how those steps are working. they had policies in place at the time of the files we looked at that were intended to protect boys that were clearly failing. it's one thing to have a policy. it's another thing for an organization run almost entirely by volunteers, to implement t s those policies effectively on the ground. to say they cooperate with law enforcement whenever they're asked to, doesn't address the fact that many times when presented with evidence of abuse, they didn't bring it to law enforcement. >> "l.a. times" investigative reporter, jason felts, thanks for being with us on this monday. >> thank you. >> i'll see you right back here tomorrow at 11:00. tomorrow's lineup, jose diaz ballhart to talk about his interview with republican
